john - Both the barley growers of america and the national wheat assoc. have powerful lobbies in d.c. The wheat lobby lost out when the law changed regarding wheat being declared on food labels but the barley growers are putting up a good fight. They have a vested interest in barley not having to be listed as an ingredient on labels. It's really embarrassing that the U.S. is behind so many other countries on this and other food issues. Barley is now taking the place of wheat in many items (snacks like flavored chips and soup mixes to name a couple) so I feel like we're going to have to defeat the barley growers before we'll ever have proper gluten-free labeling here.
