Jennifer of Gluten Free Inspired recently wrote a review of their visit to the Butternuts Eatery & Catering Company on Route 9 in Hadley, Massachusetts.

Their menu is quite extensive, although I confess that I stopped looking at the other gluten-free options when I saw they had gluten-free pasta. Given that I have not eaten pasta in a restaurant since I was diagnosed with gluten intolerance over a year ago, I abandoned all other possibilities on the menu to enjoy the dish I ordered most often in my pre gluten-free days. I know, you’re saying, “You see! That’s why you can’t have gluten now! You overdid it until you were 37, and now it’s comin’ back to haunt you.”
There are two pasta choices on the menu in this eating establishment: Butternut Prawns and Pasta and Fettuccini Alfredo. I waivered between the two choices and finally decided on the former of the two. This dish is served with a tomato concassé and a butternut lobster bisque sauce with shrimp that have been marinated with local herbs. Many of the dishes also come in two sizes, a small and a full size order. I opted for the smaller size so I could also try an a la carte house salad.
How was the overall experience?
I would return to Butternuts given another opportunity to dine there again. And yes, I would order their pasta a second time, despite my criticism in this review. The waitstaff was professional and educated regarding gluten-free dining. Our waiter inquired about my dietary restrictions, he explained how the food is prepared in the kitchen, and he was attentive throughout the entire meal. Butternuts gets the highest rating possible with respect to ambience and service. Frankly, that’s almost half the experience for me. A meal can be extraordinary, but if I don’t like the service or if I have been snubbed by the waitstaff because of my gluten intolerance, that food just doesn’t taste as good anymore.
