For those of you that like eating at McDonald’s, you might be interested to know that the company will no longer state that anything is gluten-free in their restaurants. No, that does not mean that there is nothing gluten-free there, of course. It means that the company decided to tell consumers to read the ingredients of menu items to decide whether it’s safe for them to eat there or not.

This protects the company from a legal standpoint because their formal statement on the status of gluten-free menu options is that they won’t confirm anything is safe – or unsafe – for people who can’t eat gluten. For full details about this change, please read this post from Celiac-Disease.com. Be sure to click on the link in the article regarding the status of McDonald’s French fries.

Typically when it comes to restaurants that serve sub sandwiches, it is usually best to stay away from these types of stores all together as cross-contamination is such a huge concern. However, after reading a few different testimonials on message boards from people who have successfully eaten a gluten free meal at a Jimmy John’s restaurant, I decided to look a little more into when foods they offer that are gluten free.

A quick browse of their official website does not show any gluten free menu, so I decided to contact them and see what they had to say. Here is the list they sent me:

Confirmed Gluten Free Foods

Bacon

Beef

Ham

Capicola

Salami

Turkey

Interestingly enough, they also went out of their way to point out that their cheese is NOT gluten free (this is one of the few products Celiacs can usually rely on to be gluten free at restaurants).

Of course, there are still concerns over cross-contamination, so if you decide to give Jimmy Johns a try, make sure to verify they use new gloves and take other precautions to avoid cross-contamination.

I just read some great news for pastry lovers! According to a published report, it looks like Starbucks coffeehouses, which can be found on every other street corner throughout the United States, will now be offering a new gluten free pastry, according to Forbes.com.

According to the article, the pastry, called Valencia Orange Cake, will be made with seven ingredients which are all 100% gluten free. The cake will be sold in individually wrapped packages for $2.25 each and will be available beginning on May 5, 2009.

Here is what Starbucks had to say with their announcement:

“I think one of the things we learned right from the get-go from our gluten-free customers is they can’t eat away from home very easily,” said Adrienne Knapp, a product manager in the food category at Starbucks. “A cake is actually really hard to find for someone that’s a gluten-free consumer.”

It is good to see that Starbucks is listening to their customers (or potential customers) feedback!

Although I don’t have a Carl’s Junior in my area, this has probably been our most requested gluten free menus to date, so I figured I should see what I could find for our readers and post it here.

If you look on the official Carl’s Junior menu page, you’ll notice a PDF file for Allergen Information (link provided, however that link will likely break after they update their allergen information). There you’ll find a 2 page chart of allergen information, but they only list foods that contain wheat.

If you are determined, Carl’s Junior also has a PDF file with their ingredient guide (link provided, however that link will likely break after they update their ingredient guide) on their website which lists every ingredient in every item on their menu!

That would take awhile, however, and you would still have to worry about cross-contamination, so I recommend people with Celiac Disease visit Carl’s Junior at their own risk.

Do you have a Taco Bell in your area that you’d like to eat at? It seems like most places around the United States have a Taco Bell, so I decided to do some research and see what Taco Bell has that is truly gluten free.

Unfortunately, my research produced limited results, but I did find this Taco Bell allergens chart which includes gluten as one of the many allergens on the list. It certainly isn’t an ideal or definitive list, but it was updated recently and hopefully will help some people who are determined to dine at a Taco Bell.

In the meantime, I will keep an eye on the official Taco Bell website for a gluten free menu. Once one is posted, I will be sure to get this post updated with their official gluten free information!

UPDATE 9-7-10: Updated allergen link from Taco Bell. Thanks to our reader “abc” for posting this information in the comments below!

Boston Market is a restaurant chain we used to have in our area, but I don’t believe we have them any longer. However, reader Jane contacted us to see if we had any information about Boston Market and a gluten free menu.

After some research on this topic, I was able to locate an official allergens page on the Boston Market website. Their allergens list DOES include gluten as one of the allergens, but comes with the following disclaimer:

Looking for a delicious gluten free ice cream in your area that can be eaten on the go? Dairy Queen has long been known as being very friendly to customers with Celiac Disease, and due to the size of their restaurants, it is likely that you’ve got one in your area!

If you’d like to visit a Dairy Queen in your area, you’ll first want to check out the official Dairy Queen gluten free menu. For your convenience, we’ve placed a portion of it here for your reference:

Dairy Queen’s Gluten Free Menu

    Vanilla and Chocolate Soft Serve

Arctic Rush™ slush – all flavors

    MooLatté®

(Please note: This does NOT include Hazelnut Flavored drinks.)

Additionally the following toppings are gluten-free:

    Chocolate

    Hot Fudge

    Marshmallow

    Butterscotch

    Strawberry

    Caramel

Our supplier of manufactured novelties informs us that the following items are also gluten-free:

    DQ® Fudge Bar

    DQ® Vanilla Orange Bar

Dilly® Bar (look for this in a sealed plastic wrap)

If you would like to try one of our famous Blizzard® treats, the following is a list of gluten-free Blizzard® treats.

    Reese’s® Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard®

    Butterfinger® Blizzard®

    Snickers® Blizzard®

    Heath® Blizzard®

    M&M® Blizzard®

    Banana Split Blizzard®

    Hawaiian Blizzard®

    Tropical Blizzard®

    Strawberry Blizzard®

    Mint M&M® Blizzard®

Dairy Queen has also added the following disclaimer:

Please know, many of our Blizzard® candies and toppings contain wheat, rye, oats, and/or barley and would not be safe for a customer with gluten intolerance. As the Blizzard® machine is used for all flavors, cross-contamination may occur on any flavor Blizzard®. So for your safety, we recommend notifying the Dairy Queen® staff of your allergy or intolerance and requesting they thoroughly clean the Blizzard® machine before blending your Blizzard® to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

When in doubt whether a product may contain a particular allergen, we recommend you purchase a pre-packaged manufactured novelty treat, which contains an ingredient listing and nutrition facts panel on the package.

Dairy Queen® restaurants are very busy and cross contamination may occur between ingredients. Thus a 100% confidence level cannot be guaranteed. It is important that you ask your local Dairy Queen® restaurant for an ingredient listing of the specific item in question and let them know of your special needs.

For many more gluten free items and the most up to date allergy and nutrition information, please visit our nutrition calculator.

As always, remember to explain your dietary needs to the person taking your order to help prevent cross-contamination or other problems!
