Olive Garden is another place I will not eat any more. Despite ordering off their gluten free menu I always get sick there, and have heard the same from others. Love the gluten free dishes at Carrabas and PF Changs though. I love those tope secret restaurant cookbooks, easy to adapt my old favorite dishes to gluten free and I know they are safe. Eating out is always a risk and I only do so when I travel. I’ve been gluten free a few years now and have not had good luck eating at Applebees. If you want to read the book that is the Gold Standard in this disease, read Peter Green M.D.'s book "Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic". He directs the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University and can answer ALL your questions about this disease and what you can eat. You don't need to read anything else. With the new allergen law, products that contain wheat in any derivative HAVE to indicate that allergen is in the product, but I do not believe this applies to restaurants. Some restaurants have gone far enough to let us know specifically about these "iffy" ingredients. I don't feel Applebees has done this, so if in doubt, do NOT eat it. Dont bother asking your hostess, ask the manager. Every Applebees has a gluten free menu. Within hours, I was sick and up all night with the usual abdominal cramps that comes from eating wheat products. I have a sensitivity, not celiac disease. Somewhere there was some wheat, but it wasn't obvious. I wonder if the meat had something added to it. The steak tasted great, but I won't be going there again. You can't trust the employees of a restaurant, they are not trained to know all about sensitivities.
